Children are fascinated by watching seeds sprout. This is especially the case when seeds grow quickly. Alfalfa ( Medicago sativa) is a very easy to cultivate seed which should grow in about a week. To watch the seeds germinate, sprinkle a few alfalfa seeds onto a piece of damp paper towel.
What you’ll need
a packet of alfalfa seeds (about 1.5g)
A small dish or saucer
Three paper towels
A spray mister or a small water Jug
How to Grow:
Place 3 sheets of paper towel on a plate.
After that, you should drain the water off the plate. The paper towel needs to be wet however the seeds must not be floating in water.
Distribute the seeds evenly over the towel.
Set it on a sunny window and water to stop the towel from drying. For wetting seeds, you can use a spray bottle or mister. You can also add water to the saucer by using the help of a small jug or cup.
Every day, check your seeds to see how they’re developing.
Troubleshooting
Alfalfa is a simple to grow seed that should germinate in 2 to 6 days. Here are some things to keep an eye on should your seeds not sprout in this period.
Too dry. Seeds require water to grow. Alfalfa seeds suck up about own weight of water before they germinate, and look larger. If the seeds you have are too dry, they won’t germinate. In order to ensure that your seeds do not float in the water, add some more to your plate. You can also try soaking your seeds overnight, حبوب البرسيم; supplemental resources, but ensure that you drain and rinse them with clean water before spreading them onto the paper towel.
Too moist: Seeds that are wet may cause their roots and sprouts to become rotten before they grow. The seeds may also become mouldy. It’s OK for the paper towel to be damp, but the seeds shouldn’t be floating in water. Drain excess water from the plate each when you water or mist the seeds.
Too cold or حبوب البرسيم hot: The best temperature for alfalfa’s growth is 20-25degC. If you’re growing your seeds in winter, place them in a warm place indoors. You might need to keep your seeds hydrated more often if you grow them in extremely warm temperatures. They will dry out much faster.
